Tioman Island, Peninsular (West Malaysia)

Tioman Island Quick Guide

One of South East Asia most beautiful island, her beauty was first introduced to the world in 1985 through the movie South Pacific. Since then, it has become one of the favourite islands among fellow travelers. In comparison to the other island along the east coast of Peninsular West Malaysia, the island facilities and lodging are well established. There are also several cultural villages situated on the island. One can find a huge variety of food stalls operating in almost every corner of these villages. Best of all, purchases on this island is duty free!

Getting to Tioman Islands

Located off the east coast of peninsular, the island is accessible via Mersing Jetty or Tanjung Gemok Jetty, a town situated on the east coast of Johor & Pahang.

Tioman Island ferry schedule & drop off point

Overall, advance booking is recommended. It can be reason of schedule, or availability of ferry.

Mersing Jetty to Tioman Island

The schedule normally announce 1-2 months before the departure month, due to jetty's depth affected by tide, route to Island and jetty only available on certain time. Sometime to stay in Mersing Town 1 day before the trip is recommended, to catch up early morning ferry route (5 AM- 7 AM).

Tanjung Gemok Jetty to Tioman Island

Used to have fixed departure schedule from 7 AM to 3 PM (except low season from October to February) compare to Mersing Jetty ferry route.

There are several villages and beaches in Tioman Island, the jetty connecting to each villages / beaches are selected as drop off point as below: Salang Village Air Batang Village (ABC) Tekek Town (biggest village in Tioman Island with Airport (TOD) Paya Village Genting Village Juara Beach (selected ferry route ONLY)

1.5-2 hours of ferry transfer to Tioman Island with driving journey From Johor Bahru - 2.0 hours From Kuala Lumpur - 5.0 hours From Penang Island - 9.0 hours

Tanjung Gemok Jetty

1.5-2 hours of ferry transfer to Tioman Island with driving journey From Johor Bahru - 3.0 hours From Kuala Lumpur - 4.5 hours From Penang Island - 8.5 hours

Bus to Tioman Island

There are few departing points from Kuala Lumpur direct to Mersing Jetty & Tanjung Gemok Jetty, such as KL Central, Berjaya Time Square or Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) depending on the bus company. Similar journey as self drive, but bus transit will have multiple pick up points in the city before heading to jetty.

Senai International Airport (JHB)

Although it has a small Tioman Airport (TOD) which operate for small charter or private flight only, the most convenient airport to access Tioman Island still via Senai International Airport (JHB). Pick up from airport can be arranged. This international airport can connect flight from:

Sea transfer from jetty to Tioman Island

Both jetty takes about 1.5 - 2 hours of sea transfer to Tioman Island, depending on drop off point.

Season

Affected by northeast monsoon strong wind and rough sea, most of the resorts from Salang Village, Air Batang Village (ABC), Tekek Town, Paya Village, Genting Village and Mukut Village are closed during month of December to January. But the other side of Tioman Island (east), Juara Beach will be happening, it's surf time for fellow surfers!

Pahang Marine Park Conservation Fee

Pahang Marine Park formed by 9 islands, Tioman Island is the biggest among these. Rest of the islands are Cebeh island, Tulai Island, Sepoi Island, Labas Island, Sembilang Island , Seri Buat Island, Tokong Bahara Island & Gut Island (Pulo Jehat), about 50 kilometers away from coast of Pahang & Terengganu, which fishery activities are prohibited. This made the Tioman Island corals and tropical fishes can normally be seen just a few meters from the beach.
